SUMMARY:Inner Bark: Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch
DESCRIPTION:Bark and Citizens Rare Plant Watch are joining forces to bring volunteers into the office to learn about rare plants\, and specifically Corydalis aquae-gelidae. Identifying rare plants in timber sales can help build better comments\, identify at-risk ecosystems\, and just deepen our understanding of nature. \nIf you attend this classroom portion\, you will be then invited to a field portion on July 7th. Field portion details will only be given to those who attend. \nCitizen’s Rare Plant Watch is a group based out of PSU which trains volunteers to search for rare species of plants and contribute to their conservation in the state of Oregon. Our mission is to increase the understanding of the status and extent of rare plant species throughout Oregon\, while promoting direct involvement of volunteers in conservation. \nNora Dunkirk is a Mycologist and Botanist with INR at Portland State University. She completed her PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Botany Department\, where she focused on Fungal biology in response to global change. At INR\, she works with plants and fungi\, developing species accounts for species of conservation concern\, and she is responsible for maintaining the plant\, lichen\, and fungi INR rare species databases. Nora has recently taken leadership of the group Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch\, which leads volunteers to help land managers in Oregon find rare native plants across the state.

SUMMARY:In-Person Black Oystercatcher Community Science Training – May 10\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Black Oystercatchers are a striking and easily recognizable bird with whom we share our coast. Because of their small global population size\, low reproductive rate\, and reliance on rocky intertidal habitats\, they are considered a “species of high conservation concern” and act as an indicator of intertidal ecosystem health. Our community science work with this coastal bird is aiding our efforts to protect rocky shoreline habitats. Learn more about the Oregon Black Oystercatcher Project. \nJoin this training to help us monitor Black Oystercatchers along the Oregon coast or simply to learn more about this charismatic shorebird. The training will cover Black Oystercatcher life history\, the conservation challenges they face\, and survey protocol to participate in our nest monitoring program. \n\nVirtual training:  April 30\, 2025 | 6:30 – 8 p.m.\nIn-person training: May 10\, 2025 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Circle Creek Conservation Center \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to expect: The first 2 hours will be the indoor learning portion\, followed by an optional ~1 hour field trip to a nearby location to practice observing oystercatchers. Snack and beverages will be available. We may wrap up before 2pm. \nWhat to bring (recommended): Notebook\, optics (there will be a few optics available to borrow)\, drinking water\, snacks\, beach-ready attire \nFor more information or to RSVP\, email Cara Gates\, Coastal Community Science Biologist\, at cgates@birdallianceoregon.org. \nPartners: USFWS\, USGS\, North Coast Land Conservancy\, Haystack Rock Awareness Program\, Friends of Haystack Rock\, Seven Capes Bird Alliance\, Cape Arago Audubon Society\, Kalmiopsis Audubon Society

SUMMARY:In-Person Snowy Plover Patrol Training – April 19\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	In-Person Snowy Plover Patrol Training – April 19\, 2025\n April 19\n @\n10:00 am\n –\n4:00 pm\n \nWe will be hosting a 2-night virtual event and an in-person event for Snowy Plover Patrol training in 2025. The classroom training will be presented virtually on Tuesday\, April 8 and Wednesday\, April 9 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. (click to view virtual event) and in-person at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center on Saturday\, April 19 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Snacks and beverages will be provided but plan to bring your own lunch. After lunch\, we will head to the nearby Necanicum Inlet in Seaside to look for Snowy Plovers. There will be carpool options for the field trip component.  \nBoth versions of the training will be divided into 4 learning modules. They cover all relevant topics needed to understand and survey for Snowy Plovers\, as well as what we can do to help them. Anyone interested in learning more about Snowy Plovers or participating in our Plover Patrol community science program is welcome to attend. \nMeeting location: Seaside Civic & Convention Center (room will be shared via email) \nWhat to bring (recommended): Notebook\, optics (there will be a few optics available to borrow)\, drinking water\, lunch\, beach-ready attire \n\nBird Alliance of Oregon is partnering with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Institute for Natural Resources to monitor threatened Western Snowy Plovers at 6 sites along the North Coast (from Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to Sitka Sedge State Natural Area near Pacific City) from April through September. We are looking for volunteers to conduct plover detection surveys and/or nest monitoring surveys. Field training requirements vary depending on survey type. Plover detection surveys require only 1 field training session before surveying alone\, while nest monitoring requires at least 20 field training hours before surveying alone. Survey sites vary in distance and time to complete\, ranging from 1-12 miles roundtrip and 2-6 hours. Learn more about Snowy Plover Patrol. \nFor more information or to RSVP\, email Cara Gates\, Coastal Community Science Biologist\, at cgates@birdallianceoregon.org. \n \nTraining Modules and Requirements\nNew volunteers must attend all 4 learning modules to meet the requirements for the ESA-issued Section 10 permit that allows us to monitor this threatened species. While not mandatory for returning volunteers\, attendance is highly recommended to refresh on Snowy Plover knowledge and survey methods. Regardless of your interest in volunteering\, all are welcome to join the training to learn more about Snowy Plovers and the Plover Patrol program. \nAfter attending the virtual or in-person “classroom” training\, volunteers wanting to conduct surveys must attend field training before surveying alone. \nModule 1: Life history\, threats and declineSnowy Plover Identification\, Similar Species\, Life History\, Habitat\, Behavior\, Threats\, and Decline \nModule 2: Legal status\, management strategies\, and recoveryEndangered Species Act\, Legal Status\, Management Strategies\, and Recovery \nModule 3: Survey training\, data collection\, and beach safetySurvey Protocol\, Survey Tips\, Data Collection\, and Beach Safety \nModule 4: Virtual SurveyBeach Survey Simulation\, Recap\, and Quiz \n\n	Categories:\n Birding\, Community Science \n\n	Website:\n	https://birdallianceoregon.org/event/in-person-snowy-plover-patrol-training-april-19-2025-2/ \n\n	Organizer\n\n \n Bird Alliance of Oregon \n	\nView Organizer Website \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Seaside Civic & Convention Center \n	\n\n415 First Avenue\n \n Seaside\,\n	Or\n	97138\n\n\n	+ Google Map \n\n \n \n \n\n	View Venue Website \n\n\n\n	\n	Add to calendar	\n \n	\n \n\n\n	Google Calendar\n\n\n	iCalendar\n\n\n	Outlook 365\n\n\n	Outlook Live\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Birding Day: Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge	\n\n\n	\n Forest Therapy at Bird Alliance of Oregon Wildlife Sanctuary
