SUMMARY:Night Photography (Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:Bird Alliance of Oregon presents: \nNight Photography\n\nFrom snakes to owls to the aurora borealis\, there are many incredible subjects in nature that are best found and photographed after dark. But since light is the essence of photography\, taking pictures after sunset requires you to make some crucial decisions about how to get around this hurdle. When is it best to use artificial light\, like a flash? When is it better to use a long shutter speed? \nIn this webinar\, we will discuss everything you need to confidently make pleasing images at night: equipment\, lighting\,  camera settings\, and planning\, as well as the ethics of photographing certain subjects in the dark. \n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Class Details\n\n\n\nClass: April 8\, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm\nClass fee: $20 members / $30 non-members\nNote: Class recordings will be sent out automatically to everyone who registered post-class. Thank you!\nSign-up\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Instructor\nBrian Magnier\n \nMy name is Brian Magnier\, and I live in La Grande\, Oregon. I studied ecology and evolutionary biology at Cornell University and got a Master of Professional Science degree in Exploration Science at the University of Miami. As was the case for so many people\, birds were the gateway to my passion for wildlife. I have been an avid birder since elementary school and a nature photographer for almost as long. \nI have been fortunate to be able to travel the world both for pleasure and for academic research. I have done fieldwork on mammals and insects in Alaska and New York and on birds in Borneo and Papua New Guinea. I have journeyed to Mexico\, Panama\, Costa Rica\, Sweden\, and Iceland\, photographing wildlife in dense jungles and rugged deserts. I have led hiking and kayaking tours in Alaska and snorkel tours in Belize and Indonesia. I aim to inspire people to get outside\, talk a walk\, flip over some logs\, and take a closer look at the world around them. I now live in La Grande\, Oregon\, where I can often be found wandering through deserts and forests\, camera in hand\, to find everything from birds to fungi to fossils.

SUMMARY:Botany for Birders: Rose City Flowers with Ryan Gilpin
DESCRIPTION:Bird Alliance of Oregon presents: \nBotany for Birders: Rose City Flowers with Ryan Gilpin\n\nHave you ever struggled to describe which tree a bird is in? Have you ever struggled to identify a tree making it difficult to know how to manage it? Join local arborist\, ecologist and birder Ryan Gilpin for a series of online and field classes designed to help birders more confidently navigate the plant world. Ryan will focus on observing specific characteristics of trees to gather more information. This information can be used to assign a name to a plant\, but the goals of the workshop are more about observing and describing than naming. \nEvery month\, Ryan will focus on a particular characteristic of trees (such as leaves or bark) and how that character can help you to understand more about the plant. Through coupled classroom and field sessions Ryan will help you increase your ability to describe plants and connect to the natural world around you. Field sessions will be dynamic birding sessions in places with interesting trees. When bird activity is high\, participants will be encouraged to describe where they are seeing birds in as much detail as possible using plant characteristics. When bird activity is low\, participants will be encouraged to observe and describe specific characters of the surrounding trees to work on plant identification skills. Please register seperately for each class in the series. \nRose City Flowers\nPortland can be pretty special in April. The days are longer\, the sun starts coming out\, and the cherries lining our streets wake up to share their beauty with the world. While not all flowers are so showy and beautiful\, flowers are the best feature to use when identifying plants. This class will focus on aspects of flowers to look at and tips about turning careful observation of flowers into identifying the tree. As well as\, how to identify some key flowering trees in the Portland area and when flowers might be available on different types of trees to use in identification. \nOnline Class Details\n\n\n\nClass: April 9\, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm\nClass fee: $20 members / $30 non-members\nNote: Class recordings will be sent out automatically to everyone who registered post-class. SUMMARY:Botany for Birders: Fruit
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever struggled to describe which tree a bird is in? \nFruit\nLike flowers\, fruit are some of the best features to use to identify plants and have the same challenge that they are typically not present as long as leaves. Botanically speaking (or at least for this class)\, fruits include anything that contains the seed(s) created by flowering plants (angiosperms/ non-conifers). This class will focus on aspects of fruit to look at and tips about turning careful observation of fruits into identifying the tree. As well as\, how to identify some key flowering trees in the Portland area by their fruit and when fruit might be available on different types of trees to use in identification. \nJoin us for field trip to apply your skills outdoors:\n\n\nField Trip: Botany for Birders – Fruit Columbia Children’s Arboretum with Ryan Gilpin\n\nMay 17\, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.\n\n\n\nOnline Class Details\n\n\n\nClass: May 14\, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm\nClass fee: $20 members / $30 non-members\nNote: Class recordings will be sent out automatically to everyone who registered post-class. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Botany for Birders – Fruit at Columbia Children’s Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever struggled to describe which tree a bird is in? Have you ever struggled to identify a tree making it difficult to know how to manage it? Join local arborist\, ecologist and birder Ryan Gilpin for a series of online and field classes designed to help birders more confidently navigate the plant world. Ryan will focus on observing specific characteristics of trees to gather more information. This information can be used to assign a name to a plant\, but the goals of the workshop are more about observing and describing than naming. \nField Trip: Columbia Children’s Arboretum is a park with one of the most diverse tree populations in Portland and a pretty great place to find warblers and many other bird species. If the birds are out and active\, we will bird the park and practice using as specific of language as possible to describe where we are seeing the birds and how they are interacting with the plants around them. If the birds are quiet\, we will scout for fruit (anything that contains an angiosperm seed). But students who attended all 8 sessions should be able to use all of these features together to begin identifying trees more holistically. All trees should have a readily identifiable feature in-mid May\, and hopefully we can practice bringing it all together. We should be able to describe which tree we are seeing a good bird in to our fellow students and identify most trees to be able to learn more about them. \n  \nJoin us for the online portion of this field trip: \n\n\nBotany for Birders: Fruit with Ryan Gilpin\n\nMay 14\, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\nDistance: approximately 1 mile \nElevation changes: very flat \nTrail: paved in areas\, packed dirt in areas\, bridges\, plan on going off trail to explore plants \nPacing: slow \nSun exposure: mostly shaded \nBathrooms: Portapottys available year-round \nParking: along muddy side of road on NE Meadow Ln \nPublic transit: The 6 Bus has two drops about a mile from the meeting location \nMeeting Location: Meet on the EAST side of park (Google often sends us to west side/NE 6th Dr.)! We will meet near the gate at the end of NE Meadow Lane. \n  \nField Trip Details\n\n\n\nClass: Saturday\, May 17\, 9:00 am – 11:00 am\nClass fee: $45 members / $65 non-member

SUMMARY:Insect Restoration And Conservation: Creating Usable Habitats In Human-Dominated Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:This event will be recorded and posted to: the Xerces Society YouTube channel\n\n\n\nAlthough most ecosystems on Earth are altered by humans\, we still have little understanding of how to do conservation\, especially of insects in human-dominated ecosystems. Join Dr. Chelse Prather\, Associate Professor of Biology at the Univeristy of Daylon\, to talk about four projects on this topic covering diverse ecosystems such as restored prairies\, greenroofs\, urban farms\, and solar arrays as well as diverse insect groups like beetles\, hemipterans\, bees\, ants\, and butterflies. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar. \nLearn more and register here today! \n\nDr. Chelse Prather – Associate Professor – University of Dayton\nDr. Chelse Prather is an ecologist with 20 years of diverse experience working with insect communities in forests\, grasslands\, and urban ecosystems. She is a passionate instructor\, mentor\, and scientist. She has managed a variety of projects from understanding basic insect ecology\, like what nutrients limit insect communities\, to very applied projects\, such as how the development of solar power affects insect communities.
