SUMMARY:Inner Bark: Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch
DESCRIPTION:Bark and Citizens Rare Plant Watch are joining forces to bring volunteers into the office to learn about rare plants\, and specifically Corydalis aquae-gelidae. Identifying rare plants in timber sales can help build better comments\, identify at-risk ecosystems\, and just deepen our understanding of nature. \nIf you attend this classroom portion\, you will be then invited to a field portion on July 7th. Field portion details will only be given to those who attend. \nCitizen’s Rare Plant Watch is a group based out of PSU which trains volunteers to search for rare species of plants and contribute to their conservation in the state of Oregon. Our mission is to increase the understanding of the status and extent of rare plant species throughout Oregon\, while promoting direct involvement of volunteers in conservation. \nNora Dunkirk is a Mycologist and Botanist with INR at Portland State University. She completed her PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Botany Department\, where she focused on Fungal biology in response to global change. At INR\, she works with plants and fungi\, developing species accounts for species of conservation concern\, and she is responsible for maintaining the plant\, lichen\, and fungi INR rare species databases. Nora has recently taken leadership of the group Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch\, which leads volunteers to help land managers in Oregon find rare native plants across the state.

SUMMARY:Wetland Mapping Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our FIRST Mt Hood Wetland Mapping Field Day of 2025! No experience required! \nWetlands serve many functions- from biodiversity hotspots\, water storage and filtration\, aquifer replenishment\, wildfire breaks and more. Luckily\, wetlands are protected from logging and other destructive treatments in timber sales. However\, when the Forest Service plans timber sales\, they refer to the National Wetland Inventory– an inventory mostly done in the 1980’s and with technology less sophisticated than scientists now use. Therefore\, when the Forest Service is planning timber sales and other forest projects\, they may not have accurate information about the current location\, size\, and type of many wetlands. This is where Bark comes in! Staff and volunteers are able to assess wetlands on the ground and use that information to stop destructive timber projects in sensitive wetland areas. It’s like groundtruthing but in wetlands! \nEveryone is welcome and no experience necessary! Wetland Mapping field days are moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs\, wading into wetland areas and pushing through shrubs. We’ll collect data from all over our site and assess our site to see if the wetland codes on our maps match what we see on the ground. This includes assessing plants\, hydrology and soils- be ready to get your hands dirty! \nFor every field day\, we will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. This location will vary depending on the final survey site so keep an eye out for an update/reminder email a few days before the event. At the secondary location\, I will share the coordinates for our final destination\, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site\, we will do our Land Acknowledgement writing practice\, share safety info\, talk about the site and then head into the field for some surveying! While in the field\, we will stop frequently for breaks\, water\, snacks and lunch. We will survey for approximately 4 hours\, depending on the length of our drive\, and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm. \nCheck out our website for more info: Typical Field Day\, Field Day Packing List \nQuestions?  Email Meg@Bark-Out.org

SUMMARY:Thigmomorphogenesis\, or Why Most Trees Don’t Fall Over
DESCRIPTION:Thigmomorphogenesis\, or Why Most Trees Don’t Fall Over\n\nBack by popular demand!\nHave you ever noticed a tree not fall over?  A tree’s natural state is upright—it’s their default mode. Yet\, myths pervade: \n\n“You should thin your tree”\n“You should top your tree”\n“Douglas-firs have shallow roots”\n“Lone trees are more likely to fall”\n“The roots will ruin my foundation”\n“That tree will fall and kill my whole family”\n\nDespite the ubiquity of normal\, upright trees around us\, we often only notice those scattered few that stop being upright\, most often in extreme weather.  And frankly\, those few sully the good reputation of the thousands of others. \nIn the Pacific Northwest\, our trees grow to be some of the tallest and largest organisms on the planet\, and that can be understandably intimidating as you watch them bend and sway during winter weather from your home.  Luckily\, our trees did not achieve their prominence by accident\, and this talk will explain what the trees are doing\, how they react to their environment\, and what you can do to make sure your trees are safe. \nHow does a tree build itself?  How does it choose which direction to grow?  Is it a giant\, static monolith waiting to crush everything beneath it? or a dynamic\, self-optimizing living system that wants to keep itself upright arguably more than you? Join us on a journey through the lifecycle of a tree: how it grows\, lives\, and dies.  In other words: how do trees become trees and what makes them so good at it? \nAn arborist\, a dendrologist\, and educator\, Casey Clapp is the principal consultant with Portland Arboriculture and co-host/co-creator of CompletelyArbortrary\, a weekly podcast about trees and other related topics. He’s also the author of the forthcoming book The Trees Around You: How to identify common neighborhood trees in the Pacific Northwest.  Casey holds degrees in Forestry and Environmental Conservation\, and he’s an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist\, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor\, and Municipal Specialist. Find him on social media @clapp4trees or reach him at casey@pdxarbor.com. \nTickets:\n$15.00 DISCOUNT (senior\, student\, it’s your birthday\, just can’t afford the GA price right now)\n$25.00 GENERAL ADMISSION\n$35.00 VIP: Premium seating in the front several rows of the center section\n$45.00 SUPPORTER: Premium seating\, pint glass (beer not included)\, and good feelings for supporting the program \nMinors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian \nDoors: 6pm Show: 7pm \nLink: https://www.scienceontaporwa.org/events/alberta-may_28_trees/

SUMMARY:Using Colonizers: Plantain
DESCRIPTION:Let’s take a look at using the plant Plantain! \nThis little groundcover genus\, Plantago\, is also known as ‘White Man’s Foot’. While it is not as invasive as other species I have focused on\, it is plentiful and easily harvested. During this workshop\, we will also be making salve using mainly plantain\, oil\, and beeswax. This is useful on dry skin and minor injuries! \nThe location of the training itself will be indoors at Bark’s Office at 351 NE 18th Avenue\, Portland\, OR. 97232. This event will have classroom style learning so bring pencil and paper. Gender-neutral restrooms will be available. \n‘Using Colonizers’ is Bark’s class series focusing on using invasive species as much as we can. This not only removes harmful species from Pacific Northwest spaces\, but gives us tools to use the removed plants instead of just killing them. Have a craft you’d like to teach? Have a backyard filled with invasives and would like to host? Contact me at Haley@bark-out.org \nRegistration Required \nSliding Scale $0-$20

SUMMARY:The Hover Fly: Predaceous Pollinator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hover flies\, a family of flies known as bee mimics\, frequently seen darting around flowers. Come learn about these interesting pollinators!\n\n\nHover flies\, also known as syrphids or flower flies\, are a family of flies best known as bee mimics\, are frequently seen darting around flowers. Despite this fly family’s small size and relatively hairless bodies\, they are valuable pollinators as adults. As larvae\, some hover fly species consume aphids and some species consume detritus\, an essential element in nutrient cycling. Hover flies may go unnoticed but provide essential services in your garden. In this talk\, you will learn more about how to identify them\, a bit about the research being conducted on the hover fly family\, and how gardening decisions can conserve their populations and invite them into your garden. Join the WSU Clark County Extension Master Gardener program as we host a talk from OSU Researcher Nina Miller. Put on in partnership with Clark County Public Health Green Neighbors Program.

SUMMARY:Botany for Birders: Fruit
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever struggled to describe which tree a bird is in? Have you ever struggled to identify a tree making it difficult to know how to manage it? Join local arborist\, ecologist and birder Ryan Gilpin for a series of online and field classes designed to help birders more confidently navigate the plant world. Ryan will focus on observing specific characteristics of trees to gather more information. This information can be used to assign a name to a plant\, but the goals of the workshop are more about observing and describing than naming. \nEvery month\, Ryan will focus on a particular characteristic of trees (such as leaves or bark) and how that character can help you to understand more about the plant. Through coupled classroom and field sessions Ryan will help you increase your ability to describe plants and connect to the natural world around you. Field sessions will be dynamic birding sessions in places with interesting trees. When bird activity is high\, participants will be encouraged to describe where they are seeing birds in as much detail as possible using plant characteristics. When bird activity is low\, participants will be encouraged to observe and describe specific characters of the surrounding trees to work on plant identification skills. Please register seperately for each class in the series. \nFruit\nLike flowers\, fruit are some of the best features to use to identify plants and have the same challenge that they are typically not present as long as leaves. Botanically speaking (or at least for this class)\, fruits include anything that contains the seed(s) created by flowering plants (angiosperms/ non-conifers). This class will focus on aspects of fruit to look at and tips about turning careful observation of fruits into identifying the tree. As well as\, how to identify some key flowering trees in the Portland area by their fruit and when fruit might be available on different types of trees to use in identification. \nJoin us for field trip to apply your skills outdoors:\n\n\nField Trip: Botany for Birders – Fruit Columbia Children’s Arboretum with Ryan Gilpin\n\nMay 17\, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.\n\n\n\nOnline Class Details\n\n\n\nClass: May 14\, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm\nClass fee: $20 members / $30 non-members\nNote: Class recordings will be sent out automatically to everyone who registered post-class.
