SUMMARY:Flowering Trees Walk
DESCRIPTION:“April showers bring May flowers” is a common saying\, but here in the Pacific Northwest that nursery rhyme should end something like “…but March rain is a staple\, so we also have flowers in April.” Our flowering trees start their shows as early as February\, with trees in the rose family often being some of the earliest.  Join arborist Casey Clapp\, creator and co-host of the tree podcast Completely Arbortrary\, in this tree walk to take a close look at the beautiful flowers that are out this time of year. You will learn about flower anatomy\, function\, and a bit of their evolutionary repercussions. \n\nPlease pre-register\, class size is limited\nRegistration closes Friday\, April 11th at 4:00pm\nAn email with additional program details will be sent closer to the program date\n\nAbout the instructor: Casey Clapp is the co-creator and co-host of the podcast Completely Arbortrary\, a weekly podcast about trees and other related topics. An ISA Board Certified Master Arborist\, Casey is a modern naturalist focused on education and science communication centered around trees and their impact on the world around them. He specializes in urban forestry and arboriculture and is passionate about sharing his love of trees with the people around him. \nRead our adult education policies HERE. \nIf you qualify for an Oregon income assistance program\, please emailprograms@hoytarboretum.org for details about further discounted program rates.  \nIf you are interested in learning more about becoming a Hoyt Arboretum Friends member for discounted program rates\, please click HERE. \n  \nLink: https://www.hoytarboretum.org/events/flowering-trees-04-12-25/

SUMMARY:Field Trip – Botany for Birders: Flowers at Sellwood Park/Oaks Bottom
DESCRIPTION:Bird Alliance of Oregon presets: \nField Trip – Botany for Birders: Flowers at Sellwood Park/Oaks Bottom\n\nHave you ever struggled to describe which tree a bird is in? Have you ever struggled to identify a tree making it difficult to know how to manage it? Join local arborist\, ecologist and birder Ryan Gilpin for a series of online and field classes designed to help birders more confidently navigate the plant world. Ryan will focus on observing specific characteristics of trees to gather more information. This information can be used to assign a name to a plant\, but the goals of the workshop are more about observing and describing than naming. \nField Trip: Participants will be offered the choice of Sellwood Park (mostly non-native species) or Oaks Bottom (mostly native species) to practice identifying. Perhaps there will be time for both. If the birds are out and active\, the group will bird the park and practice using as specific of language as possible to describe where we are seeing the birds and how they are interacting with the plants around them. If the birds are quiet\, participants will find flowering trees and dig into the details of how we can differentiate between their flowers. Flowers are often not around for very long and the timing is very important when identifying trees by their flowers. \n\n\n\n\n\nField Trip Details\n\n\n\nClass: Saturday\, April 12\, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm\nClass fee: $45 members / $65 non-member\n\n\n\nRegister! \n Accessibility\nDistance: Up to 2.5 miles\nElevation: 100 ft elevation change\nTrail Tread and Width: Mix of pavement\, dirt\, and gravel\, much of it narrow. Potentially muddy trails.\nPacing: Slow with frequent stops\nAmenities: No restrooms along route\nPublic Transportation: Bus lines 70\, 19\nMeeting Location: Sellwood Park Parking Lot off 7th Ave. \n  \nJoin us for the online portion of this field trip:\n\n\nBotany for Birders: Rose City Flowers with Ryan Gilpin\n\nApril 9\, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nMeet the Instructor\nRyan Gilpin\nRyan has worked primarily as a consulting arborist for the past 12 years (Nidus Consulting)\, but consistently finds ways to merge arboriculture\, ecology and conservation. Ryan is a founding member and chair of Tree Care for Birds where he has written Best Management Practices and has trained hundreds of arborists in minimizing impacts to nesting birds during their work. In order to train arborists about birds\, Ryan started going on walks and taking classes with Golden Gate Bird Alliance. It got out of hand and Ryan now spends much of his free time lugging a scope around the great places that Portland has to offer. Ryan lives in St. Johns and is particularly connected to the Columbia Slough Watershed leading monthly\, casual bird and tree walks in some of Portland’s best (and probably weirdest\, most industrial adjacent) habitats. \nRegister!
