SUMMARY:Science On Tap: Boosting Biodiversity with Insect-Friendly Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Insects are essential to life on Earth\, but insect populations are in trouble. However\, there is hope in our own yards. There are many things you can do to make a real difference in improving insect biodiversity right where you live. Our gardens can host an astonishing variety of insect life—if we provide the habitat\, we can make a real difference. \nFive years ago\, Amy Campion began making over her Portland garden to better serve the insects sharing her space. She was amazed by the creatures that soon showed up. She saw leafcutter bees harvesting petals to make nurseries\, grass-carrying wasps building their distinctive nests\, newly minted dragonflies taking their first flights. In all\, she’s seen more than 400 insect species in her little 7\,000 sq ft plot. \nIn this talk\, you’ll learn 8 things you can do to create more insect-friendly habitat in your own garden\, and you’ll meet some of the fascinating creatures that show up when you welcome them in. You’ll learn: \n* to appreciate aphids\n* to prioritize pollen over nectar\n* why you should feed caterpillars and with what\n* who’s living in your perennial stems\n* how to attract more “tickle bees” to your landscape\, and\n* how to control mosquitoes in your pond (without fish!) \n[Amy Campion](http://www.amycampion.com/) grew up in Minnesota\, but she became a gardener in the Cincinnati area\, where she worked at a wholesale nursery for 16 years. In 2013\, she moved to Portland\, Oregon\, and in 2017\, Amy co-authored *Gardening in the Pacific Northwest: The Complete Homeowner’s Guide* with Paul Bonine.\n——– \n**COST**:\n**$15.00** DISCOUNT (senior\, student\, it’s your birthday\, just can’t afford the GA price right now)\n**$25.00** GENERAL ADMISSION\n**$35.00** VIP Premium seating (front center rows)\n**$45.00** SUPPORTER: Premium seating\, pint glass (beer not included)\, and good feelings for supporting the program \n**TICKETS**: [Get tickets!](https://www.kigginstheatre.com/checkout/showing/science-on-tap—boosting-biodiversity/2363872) \nVisit the [Science On Tap website](https://www.scienceontaporwa.org/)

SUMMARY:SciPub: Addressing Climate Change with Beavers
DESCRIPTION:What is beaver-based restoration and how can it help us?\n\n\n\n\nA Science Pub lecture with Meg Waller\, Environmental Scientist\, and Restoration Program Manager with Bark. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture\n\n\n\n\nClimate change is impacting our environments more than ever. Our region is predicted to get less precipitation\, both in the form of rain and snow\, and in turn experience more frequent and intense wildfires over an extended fire season. This impacts humans\, plants\, animals and the land alike. \n\n\n\n\nConsidering these predictions\, a major focus of restoration groups across the region is how to store more water. One of the most valuable partners in this water-focused restoration is beavers! By damming small streams\, they create ponds and wetlands that store water and offer myriad other ecosystem benefits. Beavers benefit nearly all aspects of our ecosystems\, storing and filtering water\, sequestering carbon\, increasing nutrients and boosting biodiversity. \n\n\n\n\nAfter centuries of being hunted for their pelts and castoreum\, beavers are having a moment or\, more accurately\, a movement. People from Oregon to Georgia to Scotland are teaming up to spread the word about the incredible work these semi-aquatic rodents can do and how beneficial they are to so many ecosystems. Beaver-based restoration is an emerging\, holistic restoration method perfectly suited to a dynamic planet. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nScience Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region\, recommended for ages 10 and over. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n$8 suggested donation | Advance tickets recommended \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom Option\nIf you are unable to join us in person\, you can watch on Zoom. You must register in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor tickets & more info: https://omsi.edu/events/scipub-addressing-climate-change-with-beavers/

SUMMARY:Thigmomorphogenesis\, or Why Most Trees Don’t Fall Over
DESCRIPTION:Thigmomorphogenesis\, or Why Most Trees Don’t Fall Over\n\nBack by popular demand!\nHave you ever noticed a tree not fall over?  A tree’s natural state is upright—it’s their default mode. Yet\, myths pervade: \n\n“You should thin your tree”\n“You should top your tree”\n“Douglas-firs have shallow roots”\n“Lone trees are more likely to fall”\n“The roots will ruin my foundation”\n“That tree will fall and kill my whole family”\n\nDespite the ubiquity of normal\, upright trees around us\, we often only notice those scattered few that stop being upright\, most often in extreme weather.  And frankly\, those few sully the good reputation of the thousands of others. \nIn the Pacific Northwest\, our trees grow to be some of the tallest and largest organisms on the planet\, and that can be understandably intimidating as you watch them bend and sway during winter weather from your home.  Luckily\, our trees did not achieve their prominence by accident\, and this talk will explain what the trees are doing\, how they react to their environment\, and what you can do to make sure your trees are safe. \nHow does a tree build itself?  How does it choose which direction to grow?  Is it a giant\, static monolith waiting to crush everything beneath it? or a dynamic\, self-optimizing living system that wants to keep itself upright arguably more than you? Join us on a journey through the lifecycle of a tree: how it grows\, lives\, and dies.  In other words: how do trees become trees and what makes them so good at it? \nAn arborist\, a dendrologist\, and educator\, Casey Clapp is the principal consultant with Portland Arboriculture and co-host/co-creator of CompletelyArbortrary\, a weekly podcast about trees and other related topics. He’s also the author of the forthcoming book The Trees Around You: How to identify common neighborhood trees in the Pacific Northwest.  Casey holds degrees in Forestry and Environmental Conservation\, and he’s an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist\, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor\, and Municipal Specialist. Find him on social media @clapp4trees or reach him at casey@pdxarbor.com. \nTickets:\n$15.00 DISCOUNT (senior\, student\, it’s your birthday\, just can’t afford the GA price right now)\n$25.00 GENERAL ADMISSION\n$35.00 VIP: Premium seating in the front several rows of the center section\n$45.00 SUPPORTER: Premium seating\, pint glass (beer not included)\, and good feelings for supporting the program \nMinors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian \nDoors: 6pm Show: 7pm \nLink: https://www.scienceontaporwa.org/events/alberta-may_28_trees/

SUMMARY:Science On Tap: Becoming Earth - How Our Planet Came to Life
DESCRIPTION:One of humanity’s oldest beliefs is that our world is alive. Though once ridiculed by some scientists\, the idea of Earth as a vast\, interconnected living system has gained acceptance in recent decades. We\, and all living things\, are more than inhabitants of Earth—we are Earth\, an outgrowth of its structure and an engine of its evolution. \nAcclaimed science writer Ferris Jabr reveals a radical new vision of Earth where lush forests spew water\, pollen\, and bacteria to summon rain; giant animals engineer the very landscapes they roam; microbes chew rock to shape continents; and microscopic plankton\, some as glittering as carved jewels\, remake the air and sea. \nHumans are one of the most extreme examples of life transforming Earth. We have altered more layers of the planet in less time than any other species\, pushing Earth into a crisis. But we are also uniquely able to understand and protect the planet’s wondrous ecology and self-stabilizing processes. Jabr introduces us to a diverse cast of fascinating people who have devoted themselves to this vital work. \nFerris Jabr is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine. He has also written for The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, and Scientific American. He is the recipient of a Whiting Foundation Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from UC Berkeley and MIT. Jabr lives in Portland\, Oregon\, with his husband\, Ryan\, their dog\, Jack\, and more plants than they can count. \n\nDoors Open: 6:00 PM \n\n$15.00 DISCOUNT (senior\, student\, it’s your birthday\, just can’t afford the GA price right now)\n$25.00 GENERAL ADMISSION\n$35.00 VIP: Premium seating in the front several rows of the center section\n$45.00 SUPPORTER: Premium seating\, pint glass (beer not included)\, and good feelings for supporting the program \nMinors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian

SUMMARY:Slough Science: Spring Mushroom Identification
DESCRIPTION:Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council for the monthly Slough Science event series! This month we are excited to welcome Leah Bendlin for a conversation about the basics of mushroom identification and common spring mushrooms of the PNW. We will focus on common edibles like oysters and morels\, indicator species\, as well as other interesting and beautiful non-edible species. We will learn how to tell edibles apart from poisonous or just otherwise tricky potential look alikes\, noting particular physical features and habitats that will help you to identify them on your own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGetting there: This event will be held in the “Annex” at Level Beer. Keep an eye out for Columbia Slough Watershed Council signs when you arrive. Parking is free in their lot. Public Transportation? Bus 87 and 21 make stops nearby. \nLevel Beer: This is an all ages venue. Drinks (alcoholic and NA) can be purchased in the brewery throughout the event. Food is also available for purchase through on site food carts Pita Giovanni\, Tidal Boar “Shuck Truck”\, Flor de Guilaguetza. \nLevel Beer (Brewery & Taproom)\n5211 Northeast 148th Avenue\nPortland\, OR\, 97230United States (map) \nAccessibility: This site has restrooms and seating available. There is a small door frame lip at the entrance to the event area\, but otherwise no stairs present. \nQuestions? Reach out to Amanda\, at amanda.gallegos@columbiaslough.org. \nLeah Bendlin is a Portland based mushroom and community science enthusiast. She caught the mycology bug after her first outing hunting chanterelles with a friend. She was amazed at the diversity of other mushrooms that day\, and set out to learn the science of identification. That curiosity proved insatiable\, and now\, 12 years later\, she has become an expert taxonomist and aspires to learn the name of every mushroom she encounters\, and delights in teaching others. Leah has special interests in taxonomy\, uncommonly known edibles\, mycoheterotrophic plants\, slime molds\, ascomycetes (cup fungi) and social justice. She regularly leads mushroom ID classes and walks through various Pacific Northwest organizations and has volunteered as a teacher\, identifier and board member of the Oregon Mycological Society. Find her on Instagram at @leah_mycelia!
