SUMMARY:Inner Bark: Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch
DESCRIPTION:Bark and Citizens Rare Plant Watch are joining forces to bring volunteers into the office to learn about rare plants\, and specifically Corydalis aquae-gelidae. Identifying rare plants in timber sales can help build better comments\, identify at-risk ecosystems\, and just deepen our understanding of nature. \nIf you attend this classroom portion\, you will be then invited to a field portion on July 7th. Field portion details will only be given to those who attend. \nCitizen’s Rare Plant Watch is a group based out of PSU which trains volunteers to search for rare species of plants and contribute to their conservation in the state of Oregon. Our mission is to increase the understanding of the status and extent of rare plant species throughout Oregon\, while promoting direct involvement of volunteers in conservation. \nNora Dunkirk is a Mycologist and Botanist with INR at Portland State University. She completed her PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Botany Department\, where she focused on Fungal biology in response to global change. At INR\, she works with plants and fungi\, developing species accounts for species of conservation concern\, and she is responsible for maintaining the plant\, lichen\, and fungi INR rare species databases. Nora has recently taken leadership of the group Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch\, which leads volunteers to help land managers in Oregon find rare native plants across the state.

SUMMARY:Wetland Mapping Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Bark for a Mt Hood Wetland Mapping Field Day! No experience required! \nWetlands serve many functions- from biodiversity hotspots\, water storage and filtration\, aquifer replenishment\, wildfire breaks and more. Luckily\, wetlands are protected from logging and other destructive treatments in timber sales. However\, when the Forest Service plans timber sales\, they refer to the National Wetland Inventory– an inventory mostly done in the 1980’s and with technology less sophisticated than scientists now use. Therefore\, when the Forest Service is planning timber sales and other forest projects\, they may not have accurate information about the current location\, size\, and type of many wetlands. This is where Bark comes in! Staff and volunteers are able to assess wetlands on the ground and use that information to stop destructive timber projects in sensitive wetland areas. It’s like groundtruthing but in wetlands! \nEveryone is welcome and no experience necessary! Wetland Mapping field days are moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs\, wading into wetland areas and pushing through shrubs. We’ll collect data from all over our site and assess our site to see if the wetland codes on our maps match what we see on the ground. This includes assessing plants\, hydrology and soils- be ready to get your hands dirty! \nFor every field day\, we will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. This location will vary depending on the final survey site so keep an eye out for an update/reminder email a few days before the event. At the secondary location\, I will share the coordinates for our final destination\, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site\, we will do our Land Acknowledgement writing practice\, share safety info\, talk about the site and then head into the field for some surveying! While in the field\, we will stop frequently for breaks\, water\, snacks and lunch. We will survey for approximately 4 hours\, depending on the length of our drive\, and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm. \nCheck out our website for more info: Typical Field Day\, Field Day Packing List \nQuestions?  Email Meg@Bark-Out.org

SUMMARY:Virtual Snowy Plover Patrol Training – April 8 & 9\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Bird Alliance of Oregon presents: \nVirtual Snowy Plover Patrol Training – April 8 & 9\, 2025\n\nWe will be hosting a 2-night virtual event and an in-person event for Snowy Plover Patrol training in 2025. The classroom training will be presented virtually on Tuesday\, April 8 and Wednesday\, April 9 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and in-person at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center on Saturday\, April 19 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, including a field trip to nearby Necanicum Inlet to look for Snowy Plovers (click to view in-person event). \nBoth versions of the training will be divided into 4 learning modules. They cover all relevant topics needed to understand and survey for Snowy Plovers\, as well as what we can do to help them. Anyone interested in learning more about Snowy Plovers or participating in our Plover Patrol community science program is welcome to attend. \nBird Alliance of Oregon is partnering with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Institute for Natural Resources to monitor threatened Western Snowy Plovers at 6 sites along the North Coast (from Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to Sitka Sedge State Natural Area near Pacific City) from April through September. We are looking for volunteers to conduct plover detection surveys and/or nest monitoring surveys. Field training requirements vary depending on survey type. Plover detection surveys require only 1 field training session before surveying alone\, while nest monitoring requires at least 20 field training hours before surveying alone. Survey sites vary in distance and time to complete\, ranging from 1-12 miles roundtrip and 2-6 hours. Learn more about Snowy Plover Patrol. \nFor more information or to RSVP\, email Cara Gates\, Coastal Community Science Biologist\, at cgates@birdallianceoregon.org. \n\nTraining Modules and Requirements\nNew volunteers must attend all 4 learning modules to meet the requirements for the ESA-issued Section 10 permit that allows us to monitor this threatened species. While not mandatory for returning volunteers\, attendance is highly recommended to refresh on Snowy Plover knowledge and survey methods. Regardless of your interest in volunteering\, all are welcome to join the training to learn more about Snowy Plovers and the Plover Patrol program. \nAfter attending the virtual or in-person classroom training\, volunteers wanting to conduct surveys must attend field training before surveying alone. \nModule 1: Life history\, threats and decline\nSnowy Plover Identification\, Similar Species\, Life History\, Habitat\, Behavior\, Threats\, and Decline \nModule 2: Legal status\, management strategies\, and recovery\nEndangered Species Act\, Legal Status\, Management Strategies\, and Recovery \nModule 3: Survey training\, data collection\, and beach safety\nSurvey Protocol\, Survey Tips\, Data Collection\, and Beach Safety \nModule 4: Virtual Survey\nBeach Survey Simulation\, Recap\, and Quiz \nEvent Website: https://birdallianceoregon.org/event/virtual-snowy-plover-patrol-training-april-8-9-2025/
