SUMMARY:Parrott Creek Restoration Day
DESCRIPTION:Bark is partnering with the Cultural Ecology Program at Parrott Creek to restore an 80-acre site in Clackamas County\nThe Parrott Creek project site is under the leadership of Ameyalli Mañon-Ferguson who is the Cultural Ecology Program Manager for Parrott Creek Child and Family Services in Oregon City\, OR. Here\, she leads the stewardship of the 80 acres of mixed coniferous forest\, creeks\, wetlands\, and grassland prairie at their youth residential treatment program site. This program serves highly traumatized adjudicated male youth as an alternative to incarceration\, providing one-on-one and group therapy\, drug and alcohol counseling\, an on-site school and personalized treatment plans to build the skills they will need to go back into the community. As part of her role\, Ameyalli engages these youth in the outdoors\, partners with Indigenous community members and organizations\, and collaborates with environmental organizations and agencies. The combined effort and community engagement in this program work towards the ultimate goal to restore the land to be a culturally and ecologically functioning site by centering traditional ecological and cultural knowledge. \nBy leading restoration through an Indigenous stewardship lens\, prioritizing traditional ecological knowledge and service to the local Indigenous communities\, the Cultural Ecology Program demonstrates a dedication to Indigenous peoples beyond land acknowledgment statements. \nThis land site will provide Indigenous people a safe place to gather natural resources such as first foods\, medicines\, and basketry materials\, connect with the land\, and engage in environmental stewardship. Such opportunities are unfortunately limited as people are either restricted from gathering or don’t know if it is safe from waste\, pollution\, and chemicals. This is especially true for those living in the Portland metro area and other urban communities with limited access to natural areas. Through its priorities and approach\, this program works towards simultaneously addressing trauma held in the youth\, the Indigenous community\, and the land. \nJoin us to help restore this incredible space! We will be planting native plants\, protecting young plants\, removing invasives and doing trail maintenance\, depending on the day.  \nTime: 10am-1pm \nLocation: 22518 S Parrott Creek Rd\, Oregon City\, OR 97045 \nBring: All-weather gear\, long pants\, sturdy shoes (rubber boots recommended but hiking boots ok)\, rain gear\, sunglasses\, water\, snacks (some snacks provided). \nWeather forecast: NOAA Weather Oregon City. We will cancel the event if the weather is expected to be below 35 degrees OR very rainy. \nParking: Weekend events: Once inside the main entrance\, turn left and down the hill to park in the large parking lot. Look for Bark signs. \nWeekday events: Due to ongoing construction\, please park along the side of the road leading up to the entrance. You must wear a safety vest and hard hat while walking across the construction site to where we will be working. If you’re late\, please contact Meg to have someone meet you at the entrance with a vest and hardhat. \nAccessibility: Events will be light rain or shine! However\, if there is heavy rain or temperatures are below 35 degrees\, we will postpone or cancel the day. \nThis event will be focused on removing invasive plants! Invasive removal days will be a 4-5/5 accessibility with bending\, squatting\, digging large roots (often blackberry)\, handling thorny plants\, carrying materials. Each site will require walking/standing on steep hills which may be slippery and/or require crossing a small stream on a flat log. \nQuestions?  Need to carpool? Email Meg@Bark-Out.org \n  \nLink: https://bark-out.org/event/parrott-creek-restoration-day-4-12-2025/

SUMMARY:Virtual Snowy Plover Patrol Training – April 8 & 9\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Bird Alliance of Oregon presents: \nVirtual Snowy Plover Patrol Training – April 8 & 9\, 2025\n\nWe will be hosting a 2-night virtual event and an in-person event for Snowy Plover Patrol training in 2025. The classroom training will be presented virtually on Tuesday\, April 8 and Wednesday\, April 9 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and in-person at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center on Saturday\, April 19 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, including a field trip to nearby Necanicum Inlet to look for Snowy Plovers (click to view in-person event). \nBoth versions of the training will be divided into 4 learning modules. They cover all relevant topics needed to understand and survey for Snowy Plovers\, as well as what we can do to help them. Anyone interested in learning more about Snowy Plovers or participating in our Plover Patrol community science program is welcome to attend. \nBird Alliance of Oregon is partnering with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Institute for Natural Resources to monitor threatened Western Snowy Plovers at 6 sites along the North Coast (from Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to Sitka Sedge State Natural Area near Pacific City) from April through September. We are looking for volunteers to conduct plover detection surveys and/or nest monitoring surveys. Field training requirements vary depending on survey type. Plover detection surveys require only 1 field training session before surveying alone\, while nest monitoring requires at least 20 field training hours before surveying alone. Survey sites vary in distance and time to complete\, ranging from 1-12 miles roundtrip and 2-6 hours. Learn more about Snowy Plover Patrol. \nFor more information or to RSVP\, email Cara Gates\, Coastal Community Science Biologist\, at cgates@birdallianceoregon.org. \n\nTraining Modules and Requirements\nNew volunteers must attend all 4 learning modules to meet the requirements for the ESA-issued Section 10 permit that allows us to monitor this threatened species. While not mandatory for returning volunteers\, attendance is highly recommended to refresh on Snowy Plover knowledge and survey methods. Regardless of your interest in volunteering\, all are welcome to join the training to learn more about Snowy Plovers and the Plover Patrol program. \nAfter attending the virtual or in-person classroom training\, volunteers wanting to conduct surveys must attend field training before surveying alone. \nModule 1: Life history\, threats and decline\nSnowy Plover Identification\, Similar Species\, Life History\, Habitat\, Behavior\, Threats\, and Decline \nModule 2: Legal status\, management strategies\, and recovery\nEndangered Species Act\, Legal Status\, Management Strategies\, and Recovery \nModule 3: Survey training\, data collection\, and beach safety\nSurvey Protocol\, Survey Tips\, Data Collection\, and Beach Safety \nModule 4: Virtual Survey\nBeach Survey Simulation\, Recap\, and Quiz \nEvent Website: https://birdallianceoregon.org/event/virtual-snowy-plover-patrol-training-april-8-9-2025/
