SUMMARY:The Fascinating World Of Bees: From Novel Monitoring Tools To Landscape-Level Stressors
DESCRIPTION:This event will be recorded and posted to: the Xerces Society YouTube channel\n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Dr. Laura Figueroa will present on the importance of pollinators worldwide\, factors that influence pollinator communities\, and novel monitoring tools (including non-lethal AI based approaches)\, for monitoring pollinators in changing landscapes. She will present work on bee communities in solar facilities and other human modified environments. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar. \nLearn more and register here today! \n\nDr. Laura Figueroa – Assistant Professor; Environmental Conservation Department – University of Massachusetts Amherst\nDr. Laura Figueroa is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Conservation Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Figueroa was previously an NSF postdoctoral research fellow\, and completed her PhD in entomology at Cornell University. She is broadly interested in insect conservation\, with a focus on pollinators in changing landscapes and climate change. She has worked in temperate regions (primarily the Northeastern US) as well as in the tropics (in Costa Rica and in Colombia)\, and her active research program seeks to answer pressing questions in the field of pollinator conservation.

SUMMARY:Wetland Mapping Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Bark for a Mt Hood Wetland Mapping Field Day! No experience required! \nWetlands serve many functions- from biodiversity hotspots\, water storage and filtration\, aquifer replenishment\, wildfire breaks and more. Luckily\, wetlands are protected from logging and other destructive treatments in timber sales. However\, when the Forest Service plans timber sales\, they refer to the National Wetland Inventory– an inventory mostly done in the 1980’s and with technology less sophisticated than scientists now use. Therefore\, when the Forest Service is planning timber sales and other forest projects\, they may not have accurate information about the current location\, size\, and type of many wetlands. This is where Bark comes in! Staff and volunteers are able to assess wetlands on the ground and use that information to stop destructive timber projects in sensitive wetland areas. It’s like groundtruthing but in wetlands! \nEveryone is welcome and no experience necessary! Wetland Mapping field days are moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs\, wading into wetland areas and pushing through shrubs. We’ll collect data from all over our site and assess our site to see if the wetland codes on our maps match what we see on the ground. This includes assessing plants\, hydrology and soils- be ready to get your hands dirty! \nFor every field day\, we will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. This location will vary depending on the final survey site so keep an eye out for an update/reminder email a few days before the event. At the secondary location\, I will share the coordinates for our final destination\, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site\, we will do our Land Acknowledgement writing practice\, share safety info\, talk about the site and then head into the field for some surveying! While in the field\, we will stop frequently for breaks\, water\, snacks and lunch. We will survey for approximately 4 hours\, depending on the length of our drive\, and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm. \nCheck out our website for more info: Typical Field Day\, Field Day Packing List \nQuestions?  Email Meg@Bark-Out.org

SUMMARY:Monarchs And Pesticides: Understanding The Risks\, Creating High-Quality Habitat
DESCRIPTION:This event will be recorded and posted to: the Xerces Society YouTube channel\n\n\n\nPesticides are a hidden hazard in many monarch conservation efforts\, whether in working lands\, parks\, backyards\, or monarch overwintering groves. Residues in milkweed and nectar plants can degrade habitat quality and put monarchs at risk. This webinar will unpack the latest science on pesticide contamination in habitat and explore how these chemicals affect butterflies directly and indirectly. Join Emily May\, Agricultural Conservation Lead with the Xerces Pesticide Reduction Program\, to discuss practical steps land managers\, farmers\, and gardeners can take to reduce exposure and support the creation of high-quality habitat for monarchs. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar. \nLearn more and register here today! \n\nEmily May – Agricultural Conservation Lead\, Pesticide Program – Xerces Society

SUMMARY:The State Of The Bees
DESCRIPTION:This event will be recorded and posted to: the Xerces Society YouTube channel\n\n\n\nHow are U.S. bee species faring in light of the major threats they are facing? What more do we need to know to protect them? There are over 3\,600 species of bees in the United States\, but we only know the conservation status of about 20% of those species. This makes it difficult to make decisions about how to prioritize bee conservation. Join Saff Killingsworth\, Xerces Endangered Species Conservation Biologist and State of the Bees Initiative\, to discuss how conservation biologists decide which bees are imperiled and which bees are safe\, highlight some interesting bees of conservation concern\, and talk about the Xerces Society’s effort to understand the conservation status of all U.S. bee species. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar. \nLearn more and register here today! \n\nSaff Killingsworth – Endangered Species Conservation Biologist\, State of the Bees Initiative – Xerces Society

SUMMARY:SciPub: Addressing Climate Change with Beavers
DESCRIPTION:What is beaver-based restoration and how can it help us?\n\n\n\n\nA Science Pub lecture with Meg Waller\, Environmental Scientist\, and Restoration Program Manager with Bark. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture\n\n\n\n\nClimate change is impacting our environments more than ever. Our region is predicted to get less precipitation\, both in the form of rain and snow\, and in turn experience more frequent and intense wildfires over an extended fire season. This impacts humans\, plants\, animals and the land alike. \n\n\n\n\nConsidering these predictions\, a major focus of restoration groups across the region is how to store more water. One of the most valuable partners in this water-focused restoration is beavers! By damming small streams\, they create ponds and wetlands that store water and offer myriad other ecosystem benefits. Beavers benefit nearly all aspects of our ecosystems\, storing and filtering water\, sequestering carbon\, increasing nutrients and boosting biodiversity. \n\n\n\n\nAfter centuries of being hunted for their pelts and castoreum\, beavers are having a moment or\, more accurately\, a movement. People from Oregon to Georgia to Scotland are teaming up to spread the word about the incredible work these semi-aquatic rodents can do and how beneficial they are to so many ecosystems. Beaver-based restoration is an emerging\, holistic restoration method perfectly suited to a dynamic planet. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nScience Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region\, recommended for ages 10 and over. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n$8 suggested donation | Advance tickets recommended \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom Option\nIf you are unable to join us in person\, you can watch on Zoom. You must register in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor tickets & more info: https://omsi.edu/events/scipub-addressing-climate-change-with-beavers/
