SUMMARY:The State Of The Bees
DESCRIPTION:This event will be recorded and posted to: the Xerces Society YouTube channel\n\n\n\nHow are U.S. bee species faring in light of the major threats they are facing? What more do we need to know to protect them? There are over 3\,600 species of bees in the United States\, but we only know the conservation status of about 20% of those species. This makes it difficult to make decisions about how to prioritize bee conservation. Join Saff Killingsworth\, Xerces Endangered Species Conservation Biologist and State of the Bees Initiative\, to discuss how conservation biologists decide which bees are imperiled and which bees are safe\, highlight some interesting bees of conservation concern\, and talk about the Xerces Society’s effort to understand the conservation status of all U.S. bee species. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar. \nLearn more and register here today! \n\nSaff Killingsworth – Endangered Species Conservation Biologist\, State of the Bees Initiative – Xerces Society

SUMMARY:Land Tending at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the rest of the garden after the event. \nWhat: land tending\, grubbing\, and weeding. \nWhen: Wednesday\, August 13th\, 2025\, 9am-12pm \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and what plants we’ll remove. \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and on uneven terrain which can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event. \n\n\n  \nRegistration is required through organization’s website. \nFor more info: \nCANCELLED: Land Tending at Leach Botanical Garden

SUMMARY:Monarchs And Pesticides: Understanding The Risks\, Creating High-Quality Habitat
DESCRIPTION:This event will be recorded and posted to: the Xerces Society YouTube channel\n\n\n\nPesticides are a hidden hazard in many monarch conservation efforts\, whether in working lands\, parks\, backyards\, or monarch overwintering groves. Residues in milkweed and nectar plants can degrade habitat quality and put monarchs at risk. This webinar will unpack the latest science on pesticide contamination in habitat and explore how these chemicals affect butterflies directly and indirectly. Join Emily May\, Agricultural Conservation Lead with the Xerces Pesticide Reduction Program\, to discuss practical steps land managers\, farmers\, and gardeners can take to reduce exposure and support the creation of high-quality habitat for monarchs. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel. Closed Captioning will be available during this webinar. \nLearn more and register here today! \n\nEmily May – Agricultural Conservation Lead\, Pesticide Program – Xerces Society

SUMMARY:Inner Bark: Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch
DESCRIPTION:Bark and Citizens Rare Plant Watch are joining forces to bring volunteers into the office to learn about rare plants\, and specifically Corydalis aquae-gelidae. Identifying rare plants in timber sales can help build better comments\, identify at-risk ecosystems\, and just deepen our understanding of nature. \nIf you attend this classroom portion\, you will be then invited to a field portion on July 7th. Field portion details will only be given to those who attend. \nCitizen’s Rare Plant Watch is a group based out of PSU which trains volunteers to search for rare species of plants and contribute to their conservation in the state of Oregon. Our mission is to increase the understanding of the status and extent of rare plant species throughout Oregon\, while promoting direct involvement of volunteers in conservation. \nNora Dunkirk is a Mycologist and Botanist with INR at Portland State University. She completed her PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Botany Department\, where she focused on Fungal biology in response to global change. At INR\, she works with plants and fungi\, developing species accounts for species of conservation concern\, and she is responsible for maintaining the plant\, lichen\, and fungi INR rare species databases. Nora has recently taken leadership of the group Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch\, which leads volunteers to help land managers in Oregon find rare native plants across the state.

SUMMARY:Wetland Mapping Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Bark for a Mt Hood Wetland Mapping Field Day! No experience required! \nWetlands serve many functions- from biodiversity hotspots\, water storage and filtration\, aquifer replenishment\, wildfire breaks and more. Luckily\, wetlands are protected from logging and other destructive treatments in timber sales. However\, when the Forest Service plans timber sales\, they refer to the National Wetland Inventory– an inventory mostly done in the 1980’s and with technology less sophisticated than scientists now use. Therefore\, when the Forest Service is planning timber sales and other forest projects\, they may not have accurate information about the current location\, size\, and type of many wetlands. This is where Bark comes in! Staff and volunteers are able to assess wetlands on the ground and use that information to stop destructive timber projects in sensitive wetland areas. It’s like groundtruthing but in wetlands! \nEveryone is welcome and no experience necessary! Wetland Mapping field days are moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs\, wading into wetland areas and pushing through shrubs. We’ll collect data from all over our site and assess our site to see if the wetland codes on our maps match what we see on the ground. This includes assessing plants\, hydrology and soils- be ready to get your hands dirty! \nFor every field day\, we will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. This location will vary depending on the final survey site so keep an eye out for an update/reminder email a few days before the event. At the secondary location\, I will share the coordinates for our final destination\, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site\, we will do our Land Acknowledgement writing practice\, share safety info\, talk about the site and then head into the field for some surveying! While in the field\, we will stop frequently for breaks\, water\, snacks and lunch. We will survey for approximately 4 hours\, depending on the length of our drive\, and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm. \nCheck out our website for more info: Typical Field Day\, Field Day Packing List \nQuestions?  Email Meg@Bark-Out.org
