SUMMARY:Nature's Colors: Watercolor Basics for Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:In this series of very beginner-friendly classes\, students will learn the basics of mixing and painting with watercolor paints in popular colors for nature drawings. Using just a few paints\, we will focus on creating a range of nature-inspired colors using the three primaries of red\, yellow and blue\, as well as learning techniques for applying paint to paper. Each week will be dedicated to creating a range of hues within a color family: gorgeous greens\, beautiful blues\, vibrant reds and oranges\, and luminous neutrals. \nThis event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website: https://www.hoytarboretum.org/events/natures-colors-04-03-26/

SUMMARY:Resin Jewelry at Hoyt Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on art class introduces you to the creative process of making resin jewelry using UV resin\, pigments\, polymer clay\, and pressed natural elements. The workshop will begin with a casual nature walk to gather inspiration and learn about some PNW native plants before moving into the studio portion. Back inside you will explore fundamental resin techniques\, experiment with color blending\, try out clay sculpting to incorporate into the resin pieces\, and practice embedding natural materials. The workshop emphasizes creativity\, craftsmanship\, and the joy of working with both natural and handmade elements. Each student will leave with at least three finished pieces of jewelry—such as a pendant\, earrings\, or keychain—that they have designed and crafted themselves. \nThis event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website. \nFor more info: https://www.hoytarboretum.org/events/resin-jewelry/

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at Hoyt Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website. \nFor more info and registration: https://www.hoytarboretum.org/events/forest-bathing-2/

SUMMARY:Groundtruthing 101 w/ Bark
DESCRIPTION:Bark’s groundtruthing program has been a core piece of our defense work since Bark’s founding in 1999. Every field season\, Bark staff and volunteers survey areas on Mt Hood National Forest where Forest Service projects are proposed\, from timber sales\, to road maintenance\, to prescribed fire\, and more. The data we collect enables Bark and the public to assess how accurately the agency’s project documents describe the forest and impacts. By providing more transparent and accessible information\, groundtruthers help the public to better understand and engage in decisions about public lands management. Groundtruthers can and have found discrepancies in agency information and located rare or threatened plants and animal species\, leading to the alteration or cancellation of projects. \nThis training will go over what Bark surveys for and how we use this information to shape and influence the decision-making on Mt Hood National Forest. Learn how to understand US Forest Service project documents\, navigate off trail with maps\, measure tree diameter\, canopy cover\, slope\, and how to be a stronger advocate for your local National Forest. No experience required! \nGroundtruthing 101 will be a classroom-style training hosted at Bark HQ and taught by Jordan Latter\, Bark’s Forest Watch Program Manager. Bring a pen and paper or laptop if you wish to take notes. \nBark HQ is located at 351 NE 18th Avenue in Portland\, OR. It is a wheelchair-accessible space with gender neutral restrooms. \nStay tuned for Groundtruthing 201 – a hands-on groundtruthing training in the field!

SUMMARY:Butter\, Steamer and Gaper Clam Dig
DESCRIPTION:Netarts\, Oregon.\n$35 – $60 sliding scale\, children pay their age\, see details.\nNetarts\, Oregon. Learn how to find\, dig\, transport\, clean\, and prepare butter\, steamer\, and gaper clams during one of the lowest tides this year. Learn gathering regulations\, limits and the modern tools used to dig them. The times we meet are dictated by when the tides are low enough to for us to reach the clams. End time is just an estimate. \nQuick Links\n\n\nWhat to Bring    |    \nShellfish License   |    \nWhere to Meet   |    \nPayment Information   |    \nRegistration/Waiver   |    \nLocation Map\n\n\nWhat to Bring\nEach person should bring a 2026 Oregon Recreational Shellfish License – Read about licenses below. A license is mandatory for anyone 12 or older! If you have one\, bring either a clam gun or a SMALL NARROW garden shovel (NOT a huge farmer’s manure shovel; your goal is to make a quick deep narrow precise hole\, not move huge amounts of earth). The narrower\, the better. \nDigging Tools:\nBest\, but most expensive: Clam gun with vacuum release valve ($80-$150).\nThey are much easier on your back\, more efficiently bring up solid shafts of the sand\, faster at digging\, and are better environmentally for the clam beds. They are also the most expensive\, but well worth it if you end up clamming on a regular basis. Clam Guns with Vacuum release are difficult to find in retail stores even if you are at the coast. All are available online. There are three types of clam guns I know of with vacuum release tubes varying in quality and features. They are the Claminator\, the Clam Hawk and the Clam Vac. I use the Claminator\, since I clam regularly\, and it’s design is better suited for digging butter and gaper bay clams then the others in sand or muck. They are also great for razors. Go here for more information about vacuum release clam guns.\nGood and least expensive: Spade shovel ($20-$30)\nMany people have these already or can borrow one. You can also bring a regular shovel just to try it\, if that is all you have or can borrow. Bring whatever is handy. The goal is to dig deep and narrow holes – to move as little sand as possible. Big fat shovels are bad since they force you to move much more sand then necessary and therefore kill a lot of other organisms\, including baby clams living in the sand. \nDO NOT:\n1) Buy a special “clamming” shovel just for this event. They are designed for razor clamming experts and work great for that. While they are great to dig for these clams too\, the narrow flat-bladed spade shovel I’m recommending is cheaper and does a good job. If you already own a razor clam shovel\, it is a great choice\, bring it.\n2) Buy a standard cheap clam gun. They do not have a vacuum release so are very ineffective in the bays. They can work fine for razor clams depending on conditions\, but NOT for the bay clams we are digging for. A narrow bladed shovel is better than a cheap clam gun.\n3) Bring toy shovels\, gardening hand trowels\, short survival shovels\, or big fat manure shovels. Toy hand shovels or gardening hand trowels are only good for infants that are playing in the sand\, not clamming. \n \n\n\n\nA current Oregon Shellfish Collecting License\nAny remaining registration materials that you need to hand in..\nWarm layered insulating clothing (wool is best\, cotton is worst) that can get wet and dirty – you knees and arms up to your shoulders will get wet and dirty.\nOld wettable tennis shoes\nTowel\nA change of cloths\n\n\n\n\nOne 3 or 5 gallon pail per person\nBackpack\nWater\nA sac lunch\nSnacks\nMoney if you want to buy John’s books ($25-30 each [sliding scale] list price is $28). We accept cash\, check\, or CC ($1 extra each book for CC fee). Edible Wild Plants\, Volumes 1 and 2 are available after each workshop to look at or buy.\n\n\n\nNote: Shovels can be dangerous to carry around groups\, so please pack and handle them with care! Prepare for variable coastal weather! While we hope to go through water at only foot level\, depending on Mother Nature\, you may have to wade through thigh high water\, slog through muck up to your ankles\, and climb over hillsides. It is all in a day’s adventure! \n\nRecreational Shellfish Licenses\nRecreational Shellfish Licenses are now required for anyone 12 and over to collect shellfish in Oregon. In-state licenses are $10/year\, Out of state licenses are $19 for 3 days or $28/year. 3-Day licenses must specify the days you intend to do the collecting. You must carry the License with you during the workshop (in a phone app or a printed copy) or you will only be allowed to watch. If shellfish are found in your possession on the beach and you do not have a license\, the fine is $80 and up. Licenses should be purchased “PRIOR” to our events by going to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife web site. DO NOT wait until the last minute! Here is how to do it: \nSteps to Getting a Shellfish License\nGo to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife web site Or you may be able to do the whole thing from your phone from their “MyODFW” app. I have not tried the phone app route to pay so the directions here are only how to do it on your computer.\nWait until after January 2 of the workshop year of the workshop you register for.\nIf you are new\, press: “Create an Account Today”\nCreate a user name & password – Record them since you will use the same account every year when purchasing a license or to open the app.\nIf you already have a digital account\, press: “Verify/Look up your Account”\nFollow the prompts.\nOnce an account is created click\, “Purchase From the Catalog”\nType “Annual Shellfish License” in the search bar.\nClick “Add” to add it to your cart. Then go to your cart to purchase.\nWhen done\, the license will be added to your\, “Recreational Portfolio” for the current year. It is good until December 31 of the year you buy it.\nPrint out or save a pdf copy to your computer.\nOn your phone go to your APP Store and search for “MyODFW”. Add it to your phone apps. Load in your user name and password and it will display your license. Then if you are ever stopped by the coastal authorities you can just pull up the app.\nIf you have trouble understanding the process\, the licensing office number is: 503-947-6101 \nFor more information:\nCall the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6000.\nGeneral Clamming Information: Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife\nShellfish Regulations & Limits: Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife \nNote: that a license does not allow us the ability to collect shellfish if there is a marine toxin advisory from the Department of Fish & Wildlife\, The Department of Health\, or the USDA.\n  \nMeet us in Tillamook\nMeet us in Tillamook at the NW corner of the Safeway Parking lot adjacent to Stillwell Ave and 3rd street: Be there before 7:45am and wait patiently – see map. The Safeway typically opens by 5am\, so go into their bathroom and empty your bladder prior to our arrival (force yourself – it’s the last chance you will have for almost 3 hours). Don’t park in the surrounding streets. Wait patiently in the parking lot in case we get delayed\, get to know the other participants\, read a book\, change into your beach cloths and shoes. We’ll swing by soon to pick you up and proceed on to the workshop site. You must be there when we arrive or you will miss us. SUMMARY:Seaweed Foraging on the Oregon Coast in Garibaldi\, OR w/ Shifting Tides
DESCRIPTION:Seaweed Foraging Workshop: Guided Exploration of Oregon’s Tide pools\nDiscover the magic of Oregon’s coastline in this guided seaweed foraging workshop that takes you deep into the heart of the Pacific Northwest’s intertidal ecosystems. Led by seaweeds #1 fan\, Alanna Kieffer\, this immersive experience introduces participants to the incredible diversity of native seaweeds that thrive along Oregon’s rocky shores. \nWe’ll begin with an introduction to tidepool ecology—learning about tides\, oceanography\, and the unique marine habitats that support more kelp species here than anywhere else on Earth. During a guided walk from the highest to lowest tide points accessible\, you’ll practice identifying a handful of common Oregon seaweed species depending on the season and site conditions. Discover their culinary uses and and understand how they contribute to healthy marine systems. \nThe workshop emphasizes sustainable foraging techniques\, showing you how to harvest responsibly and minimize ecological impact. You’ll also explore seasonal harvesting regulations and ethical guidelines for collecting along Oregon’s coast. \nBack on shore\, participants will learn methods for processing and preserving wild seaweeds\, including drying\, pickling\, and grinding. Samples of freshly made seaweed seasoning and pickled seaweeds will be provided for tasting\, offering a sensory connection to the ocean’s flavor. \nEach session concludes with a community discussion around the cultural\, ecological\, and culinary significance of seaweed in Oregon’s coastal traditions. Participants leave not only with their own harvested seaweed but with new confidence to explore tidepools mindfully and a deeper appreciation for the Pacific’s abundant ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Highlights \n\n\nGuided tidepool exploration with a marine biologist and foraging guide \n\n\nIdentification of native Oregon seaweed species \n\n\nEducation on tides\, oceanography\, and intertidal ecology \n\n\nSustainable harvest and processing techniques \n\n\nSeaweed tasting: seasoning\, pickles\, and dried samples (subject to availability) \n\n\nDiscussion of seaweed’s role in Oregon’s ecosystems and food culture \n\n\nOpportunities for hands-on learning\, discovery\, and connection with other like minded individuals! \n\n\n\nFor more info and tickets: https://www.shiftingtidesnw.com/workshops/seaweed-forage-26f

SUMMARY:Natural History Book\, Lake Oswego Public Library
DESCRIPTION:The Natural History Book Group was founded on the recognition that Indigenous peoples have maintained a deep and reciprocal relationship with the land now known as Lake Oswego for millennia\, the group acknowledges this history as an essential grounding for its work. Through participant-selected readings that focus on Traditional Ecological Knowledge\, members explore how literature and nonfiction can deepen our understanding of the watershed and its indigenous history\, while inspiring practical steps toward a more just relationship with both the land we call home and its original caretakers. \nLed by the Lake Oswego Watershed Council\, this group meets bi-monthly on the second Tuesday of every other month (January\, March\, May\, July\, September\, and November) at 5:00pm. We meet at the Lake Oswego Public Library in the second-floor conference room. New members are welcome. \nOur Next Book\nDiscover the deep history of land stewardship and Indigenous plant knowledge in Keeping It Living: Traditions of Plant Use and Cultivation on the Northwest Coast of North America\, edited by Douglas E. Deur and Nancy J. Turner. \nWhen: Tuesday\, May 12\, 2026 | 5:00–6:30 pm\nWhere:  Lake Oswego Public Library 706 4th St\, Lake Oswego \nThis groundbreaking collection explores how Indigenous communities across the Pacific Northwest actively cultivated and cared for the landscapes that sustained them for thousands of years. Drawing on research from ethnobotanists\, ecologists\, archaeologists\, and Indigenous knowledge holders\, the book reveals sophisticated land management practices—from tending camas prairies and wapato wetlands to cultivating berry patches and forest gardens. \nKeeping It Living challenges the long-held myth that the region’s ecosystems were untouched wilderness\, showing instead how cultural traditions and ecological knowledge shaped resilient and productive landscapes. Through stories of plant stewardship and traditional ecological knowledge\, the book invites readers to reconsider how people and ecosystems can thrive together.

SUMMARY:The Silken Thread: Five Insects & Their Impacts on Human History
DESCRIPTION:A moth\, a flea\, a mosquito…\nInsects are seldom mentioned in history texts\, yet they significantly shaped human history. For example: \n* Silkworms (moths) have been farmed to produce silk for millennia\, and the Silk Road created a history of empires and cultural exchanges of ideas\, philosophies\, and religions.\n* Fleas and lice carried bacteria that caused three major plague pandemics. Bacteria carried by insects left their ancient clues as DNA embedded in victims’ teeth.\n* Lice caused outbreaks of typhus\, especially in crowded conditions such as prisons and concentration camps. Typhus aggravated the effects of the Irish potato famine\, and Irish refugees took typhus to North America.\n* Mosquito-borne yellow fever was transported to the Americas via the trans-Atlantic slave trade\, causing panic in the US and creating hazards in constructing the Panama Canal. \nDr. Rob Wiedenmann will explore the impact and common threads connecting these insects. This talk is based on his book\, coauthored by J. Ray Fisher: The Silken Thread: Five Insects and Their Impacts on Human History. \nDr. Rob Wiedenmann is Professor Emeritus of Entomology at the University of Arkansas. He received a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, and a Ph.D. in Entomology\, both from Purdue University. He also worked at the Illinois Natural History Survey\, where he focused on biological control of insects and weeds. He is a past-president of the Entomological Society of America. \n——–\n**COST**:\n**$15.00** Discount (senior\, student\, it’s your b-day\, just can’t afford the GA price)\n**$25.00** GENERAL ADMISSION\n**$35.00** VIP Premium seating (front center rows)\n**$61.20** BOOK/TICKET combo (15% OFF both!) \nGet tickets here! https://www.kigginstheatre.com/checkout/showing/science-on-tap—five-insects/2656498) \nVisit Science On Tap: https://www.scienceontaporwa.org/ \n

SUMMARY:Seaweed Foraging in Garibaldi\, OR w/ Shifting Tides
\n\n\n\nFor more info and tickets: https://www.shiftingtidesnw.com/workshops/seaweed-forage-26g
