SUMMARY:Brainy Birds: Spring Class
DESCRIPTION:Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum\, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And\, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum\, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. \n \n\nRegistration closes 2 hours before the start time\nClass starts indoors and ends outside with a guided walk\nReminder & details will be emailed closer to the program date\nWhen you attend at least two Brainy Birds classes\, you will receive a coupon code for 15% off of future ticket prices\n\n  \nAbout the instructor: Dr. Kiki Sanford is a science communicator\, an informal educator\, public speaker\, community-builder\, non-profit leader\, strategic thinker and entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience talking about science. She’s been interested in birds even longer. Her PhD work at UC Davis investigated learning and memory in birds\, and she has spent decades enjoying & observing their fascinating behaviors. She founded\, produces\, and hosts the This Week in Science (TWIS) podcast\, the longest-running\, female-owned science podcast\, which live streams weekly on Facebook\, Twitch\, & YouTube. She is Executive Vice President and co-founder of the Association of Science Communicators (ASC)\, hub for the professional science communication community\, which has organized the SCIENCE TALK conference here in Portland\, OR for the past 10 years. Additionally\, her consultancy\, Broader Impacts Productions\, helps scientists & organizations create effective & engaging multi-media science storytelling. She’s excited to explore the birds of Hoyt Arboretum and discover their many stories with you! \nTo register: https://www.hoytarboretum.org/events/brainy-birds-04-18-26/

SUMMARY:First Seaweed Forage of the Season in Garibaldi\, OR w/ Shifting Tides
DESCRIPTION:Seaweed Foraging Workshop: Guided Exploration of Oregon’s Tide pools\nDiscover the magic of Oregon’s coastline in this guided seaweed foraging workshop that takes you deep into the heart of the Pacific Northwest’s intertidal ecosystems. Led by seaweeds #1 fan\, Alanna Kieffer\, this immersive experience introduces participants to the incredible diversity of native seaweeds that thrive along Oregon’s rocky shores. \nWe’ll begin with an introduction to tidepool ecology—learning about tides\, oceanography\, and the unique marine habitats that support more kelp species here than anywhere else on Earth. During a guided walk from the highest to lowest tide points accessible\, you’ll practice identifying a handful of common Oregon seaweed species depending on the season and site conditions. Discover their culinary uses and and understand how they contribute to healthy marine systems. \nThe workshop emphasizes sustainable foraging techniques\, showing you how to harvest responsibly and minimize ecological impact. You’ll also explore seasonal harvesting regulations and ethical guidelines for collecting along Oregon’s coast. \nBack on shore\, participants will learn methods for processing and preserving wild seaweeds\, including drying\, pickling\, and grinding. Samples of freshly made seaweed seasoning and pickled seaweeds will be provided for tasting\, offering a sensory connection to the ocean’s flavor. \nEach session concludes with a community discussion around the cultural\, ecological\, and culinary significance of seaweed in Oregon’s coastal traditions. Participants leave not only with their own harvested seaweed but with new confidence to explore tidepools mindfully and a deeper appreciation for the Pacific’s abundant ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Highlights \n\n\nGuided tidepool exploration with a marine biologist and foraging guide \n\n\nIdentification of native Oregon seaweed species \n\n\nEducation on tides\, oceanography\, and intertidal ecology \n\n\nSustainable harvest and processing techniques \n\n\nSeaweed tasting: seasoning\, pickles\, and dried samples (subject to availability) \n\n\nDiscussion of seaweed’s role in Oregon’s ecosystems and food culture \n\n\nOpportunities for hands-on learning\, discovery\, and connection with other like minded individuals! \n\n\n\nFor more info and registration: https://www.shiftingtidesnw.com/workshops/seaweed-forage-26a

SUMMARY:An evening of physics and philosophy with award-winning cosmologist Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein
DESCRIPTION:A special Science Pub lecture in concert with the release of Dr. Prescod-Weinstein’s newest book\, The Edge of Space-Time: Particles\, Poetry\, and the Cosmic Dream Boogie. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture\n\n\n\n\nDrawing on poetry and popular culture—from Langston Hughes\, Queen Latifah\, and Lewis Carroll\, to Big K.R.I.T.\, Sun Ra\, and Star Trek—Dr. Prescod-Weinstein will take some of the most abstract concepts of theoretical physics and render them accessible for any who come to learn about the history and fundamental nature of our universe. \nHere we meet the quantum cat that is both dead and alive\, learn the difference between dark matter and dark energy\, explore the inner workings of black holes\, and investigate the possibility of a unified theory of quantum gravity\, following our speaker to the far reaches of the cosmic event horizon and down to the tiniest (and queerest) neutrino. \n\n\n\n\nAlong the way\,  informed by her deep knowledge of post-colonial history and Black feminist thought\, Prescod-Weinstein will challenge listeners to imagine a better path forward in our pursuit of humanity’s undeniable connection with the stars\, viewing physics as an essential way for everyone to look at the universe. \n\n\n\n\nScience Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region\, recommended for ages 10 and over \n\nFor tickets and more info: https://omsi.edu/events/science-pub-the-edge-of-space-time/

SUMMARY:Seaweed Foraging in Newport\, Oregon w/ Shifting Tides

SUMMARY:Science on Tap - The Counting of Crows
DESCRIPTION:There is no animal we’re more aware of having as neighbors as the American Crow. Loud\, ubiquitous\, and immediately recognizable\, most Portlanders will see crows every day. And yet\, there are few animals as mysterious and captivating. \n\nIf I feed crows\, will they bring me shiny presents?\nWhy are crows so intelligent\, and what do they do with those big brains?\nWhy\, if we look outside at dawn and dusk\, do we see vast numbers of them all flying in the same direction?\nWhy do they tear out the grass in our lawns?\nWhy do they bring bits of food and wash it in our bird baths?\nWhy do they dive bomb some people?\nDo they really remember human faces? And hold funerals for their fallen?\n\nIn this wide-ranging exploration of the exceedingly common\, and unique\, American Crow\, we’ll learn what makes them so fascinating and mysterious\, and try to answer some of these questions along the way.\nBrodie Cass Talbott works at Bird Alliance of Oregon\, where he has been educating both adults and kids about birds since 2018. He leads birdwatching tours near and far\, teaches classes on bird ecology and identification\, and works to engage the growing birdwatching community in the conservation work that Bird Alliance of Oregon has been doing since 1902.\n——–\nCOST:\n$25 GENERAL ADMISSION\n$35 VIP Premium seating (front center rows)\n$45 SUPPORTER (Premium seating\, pint glass (beer not included)\, and good feelings for supporting the program) \nTICKETS: Get tickets!

We will make a slow loop around the trail\, looking for birds and listening for bird songs and calls\, and spending time getting to know each bird we encounter! Bring your curiosity and binoculars if you have them (we’ll have a couple extra pairs if you want to borrow them)! SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at Hoyt Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website. \nFor more info and registration: https://www.hoytarboretum.org/events/forest-bathing-2/

SUMMARY:Groundtruthing 101 w/ Bark
DESCRIPTION:Bark’s groundtruthing program has been a core piece of our defense work since Bark’s founding in 1999. Every field season\, Bark staff and volunteers survey areas on Mt Hood National Forest where Forest Service projects are proposed\, from timber sales\, to road maintenance\, to prescribed fire\, and more. The data we collect enables Bark and the public to assess how accurately the agency’s project documents describe the forest and impacts. By providing more transparent and accessible information\, groundtruthers help the public to better understand and engage in decisions about public lands management. Groundtruthers can and have found discrepancies in agency information and located rare or threatened plants and animal species\, leading to the alteration or cancellation of projects. \nThis training will go over what Bark surveys for and how we use this information to shape and influence the decision-making on Mt Hood National Forest. Learn how to understand US Forest Service project documents\, navigate off trail with maps\, measure tree diameter\, canopy cover\, slope\, and how to be a stronger advocate for your local National Forest. No experience required! \nGroundtruthing 101 will be a classroom-style training hosted at Bark HQ and taught by Jordan Latter\, Bark’s Forest Watch Program Manager. Bring a pen and paper or laptop if you wish to take notes. \nBark HQ is located at 351 NE 18th Avenue in Portland\, OR. It is a wheelchair-accessible space with gender neutral restrooms. \nStay tuned for Groundtruthing 201 – a hands-on groundtruthing training in the field!
