SUMMARY:Edible Wild Plants on the First Days of Spring\, 1-4pm
DESCRIPTION:Portland\, Oregon.\n$30 – $60 sliding scale\, children pay their age\, see details.\nMake a choice between attending this or the 9am-noon workshop. We’ll explore several areas on Sauvie Island to inspect this spring’s early green delectables near the Vernal Equinox. See and sample from plants you pass by everyday. The earlier you start in the spring\, the more foods you can harvest in the year. It also pays to see plants at different stages of growth. Many plants will have emerged\, others we will identify where they are going to grow. Again\, choose either this or the morning workshop when you register. Once a choice is made you will need permission to transfer to the other. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring\n— Prepare for the weather.\n— Any remaining registration materials that you need to hand in.\n— Comfortable hiking shoes or boots. No flip flops.\n— Money if you want to buy John’s books ($25-30 each [sliding scale] list price is $28). We accept cash\, check\, or CC ($1 extra each book for CC fee). Edible Wild Plants\, Volumes 1 and 2 are available after each workshop to look at or buy. \nMeeting Site and Parking\nSauvie island is a 10 mile drive from downtown Portland. Go north towards St Helens on Hwy 30. Turn right onto the Sauvie Island bridge. We’ll meet at the parking lot on the far side of the island store – Sam’s Cracker Barrel Grocery\, 15005 NW Sauvie Island Rd\, Portland\, OR. Here is a map to the site.\nWe’ll car pool and caravan from there to habitats on the island. Ordinarily Tri-met bus #17 will take you to the bus stop – #8437 – Gilihan Rd and Sauvie Island Dr which is about 60 yards from the store. \nThere is no bus on Sundays.\n\n\n\nPricing Details\nSliding Scale Economics\nDue to hard economic times for some\, sliding scales are offered to support individual financial circumstances.  We ask participants to pay what they feel they can afford within the range offered for each workshop.  You decide what to pay using an honest assessment of your individual circumstances.  We do not ask anyone to explain their very personal decision.  The high end is a very reasonable price for these quality workshops for those who are doing well in this economy. Groups must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. Rendezvous have their own rates. \nDiscounts\n$5 Discounts are available on our Registration Form for adult family members that attend together\, persons identifying as indigenous\, full time college students and scout leaders. Children (17 and under) must be accompanied by their parent(s). Children under 7 are free. Children 7 and above pay their age. Classrooms and teachers with students are not eligible for these discounts and must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. If you do not show up the day of a workshop you registered for\, you forfeit the full amount paid. \n\n\n\nEnrollment Limited! – Advanced registration reserves you a place in the workshop. Walk-ons may be turned away if our size limit is reached. When registering by mail\, assume a workshop is open unless you see a “FULL” notice posted above. \nRegistration\nDownload the REGISTRATION and WAIVER Forms. SUMMARY:Beginning Birding and Sauvie Island Exploration: Migration Edition (Sundays: Apr\, May\, June)
DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	Beginning Birding and Sauvie Island Exploration: Migration Edition (Sundays: Apr\, May\, June)\n April 20\n @\n8:00 am\n –\n12:00 pm \n\n$145 \n \nThis is a three-part series on Sunday mornings: April 20\, May 18\, and June 22\, 2025. The fee covers all three sessions.\nThis field class series is perfect for those interested in developing and sharpening their birding skills under various field conditions with local expert birders. The refuge will be completely open in May and June\, allowing access that is closed to the public from October through the end of April each year. We will venture deep into the refuge as spring unfolds\, and the island becomes a wonderful cacophony of territorial bird songs. Explore various habitats on the island\, learn bird voices\, and search for waterfowl\, songbirds\, and raptors. \nLocated within the heart of the Pacific Flyway\, Sauvie Island is the largest island in the Columbia River and the site of an extensive wildlife refuge. We could not ask for a better\, more accessible\, and diverse landscape to call our local birding patch. Join Greg and Ricky for Sunday morning explorations at one of Oregon’s most accessible Important Bird Areas. Sauvie Island has abundant open spaces and a mix of habitats that hosts a wide variety of breeding residents. \nThe mid-spring brings exciting changes to the birdlife of Sauvie Island. By May most wintering waterfowl will have departed for parts north. We will welcome back many of our migratory resident birds\, such as Warbling Vireo; Black-headed Grosbeak\, Western Tanager\, Common Yellowthroat\, Willow Flycatcher\, and Western Wood-Pewee. We will be on the lookout for non-resident migrants passing through\, such as shorebirds\, gulls\, terns\, loons and grebes. \nImportant Details\nMeet Greg and Ricky at the Sauvie Island parking lot near the bridge at 8:00 a.m. each Sunday. Parking permits must also be purchased on your own. \n\nThe only access to Sauvie Island is via the bridge off Highway 30. Consider filling your tank in advance\, as gasoline is unavailable on the island. Parking is free at the bridge parking lot. Parking permits are required on Sauvie Island to park in all wildlife areas on the island. Daily permits are $10.00; annual permits are $30.00. More information on permits. \nYou will drive yourself\, or car-pooling will be an option. Bring snacks and water.
