SUMMARY:Field Trip: Exciting Spring Migrants
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip: Exciting Spring Migrants\n\nMarch is the official start of songbird migration in Portland\, and Powell Butte is the best place to search for Western Bluebird and other early migrants. Join Brodie in exploring the habitat of Western red cedar-dominated forest\, hawthorn shrubland\, open meadows\, and riparian habitat along Johnson Creek in search of every bird to be found! \n*Meeting location will be emailed to you by your leader several days before the field trip. \nJoin Brodie for the accompanying class on March 11. Registration in the class is recommended but not required to join this trip: \n\nExciting Spring Migrants\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\nPacing: Slow\, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds.\nAmenities: There are bathrooms only at the visitor center. They are currently replaced by portapotties.\nPublic Transit: Powell Blvd. is serviced by Trimet #9\, but it is still a fair distance from Powell to the parking lot on top of Powell Butte. Cyclists should be prepared for a ½ mile\, steep hill to access the parking lot. The gates to Powell Butte open at 7 am.\nRest Stops: One or two benches are available along the route\nDistance: Varies\, generally up to 3 miles\nElevation Changes: 300 feet (total up and down)Trail Tread and Width: Powell Butte trails are generally wide and mostly flat gravel trails on exposed\, full sun landscape. Where trails enter forested sections they become narrower and often steeper.
